So I got my new MBP yesterday. After playing on them in the store I decided the base 13" model was sufficient for me.

Before this I had an old core duo macbook that I didnt care if i fkd it up..

My question is, is it bad to leave it on overnight?

I generally get on it after work around 3pm, and am on it the majority of most days. I use my laptop as a TV in my bedroom... Is it bad to regularly leave a movie playing as I fall asleep, in turn leaving the MBP on all night until I wake up the next morning?? then its asleep from around 7am-3pm most days.

Is this much steady use bad for it? What problems could it cause??

Also, is it bettery on the battery to:
charge it to full, then run the battery down before plugging it back in;
or just keep it plugged in at home??

Your MBP is ment to be used and that's why you bought it so enjoy it. As for the battery keeping it plugged in is no problem but I believe the book that came with it says to drain and recharge 1 once a month. I might be mistaken on this as I do not have the late 09 but a late 08 with the old removeable batt.
Can someone help with this last point.

Yeah the battery issue is a big deal to me, I'm in LOVE with how long its lasting, and I want it to keep as long as possible, being the batteries in it are not user replaceable under warranty..
