I've read all the stuff I can find on setting settings and permissions, I can't figure it out.

I have an HDD from my dead laptop connected to my Mac. The Finder sees it, BUT when I get info for it, I don't have a lock or dropdown permissions box. I need to change this so that I can backup that data!

I'm logged in as admin and have even given guest permissions in the system preferences in System Preferences > Accounts in an attempt to do this.

What else am I forgetting?
