Screen Saver screen won't close

I have a new mac. I went into system preferences to try and change my screen saver. When i tried to change it from the black screen to the first choice, the rainbow circle that turns appeared and will not shut off. I have tried to shut the computer down and it will not let me. It has been spinning for around 1/2 hour now. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Did you try to force quit System Preferences first? Look here.
