how to copy my songs on ipod to itunes on my mac

tried doing it using itunes but could not do it, will i have to download some software to do that or is there a way to do it?

Yes, it's perfectly safe.

However, it looks as though Senuti is no longer freeware. I'm sure I have an older copy sitting around somewhere, I'll if I can dig it up. I'll post the link when I have it uploaded somewhere, unless somebody manages to post a link to an older version first.
