how do you adjust what appears on the right of the top menu bar ie how would i stop the bluetooth feature from showing up? it just popped up today after never having been there before

In the case of the Bluetooth icon, click the icon and select 'Open Bluetooth Preferences...' In the System Preferences box that opens, uncheck the box at the bottom of the window that says 'Show Bluetooth status in the Menu Bar."

You should find most of the other icons can be controlled in a similar manner.

Or you can just hold Command, click on the icon and simply drag it off the menu bar.
