Question How do I connect my Mac to a Windows XP Machine?

Okay I am a complete Noob when it comes to Mac (just bought my brand new Macbook Pro 3 weeks ago!)

My dilemma: My boss has some spreadsheets, word documents, files, etc on his PC (Windows XP) that I need access to. I work from home, so working on his PC is out of the question. What I want to do is be able to login to his PC and open the files (on my Mac) edit them and save them back on his PC.

I was thinking Remote Desktop...but I don't want to actually CONTROL his PC. I want him to be able to work like he normally would on his PC and I could "sign in" and use his files (that he pre designates) without affecting him in any way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!
Matt

Mac Specs: 15" mbp, too many ipods and other stuff
The easiest way to accomplish this, really, would be to have a VPN setup and use samba sharing.

Thanks, what is samba sharing? And where can I find a VPN setup?

I found this in my research...
Home Server: How to set up a home FTP server

would something like this work?
