I'm used to the HOME and END keys forcing the text cursor to go to the beginning and the end of a line, respectively. Apparently, that isn't the case on my iMac OS X 10.5.5.

What am I missing?

I don't know if iMacs keyboard are different but you can always option + up/down and it'll scroll up/down real fast.. kinda like page up and page down.

Use CMD-Left arrow to go to the beginning of a line.
Use CMD-Right arrow to go to the end of a line.

Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).
