Hi! I'm a COMPLETE mac noob..
I've worked with Linux a bit and i've read that Mac comes from a linux platform kinda.. (dont correct me if i'm mistaken lol)..
I, for some odd reason that I dont really know, used to hate macs.. until i heard so many good things about macs.. like "it never crashes", or "you can run multiple applications at the same time" and stuff like that.. also one of the major reasons why it caught my attention is because my friend owns a iBook G4 and he can play Halo Mac just fine with kick-*** graphics too! and i own a HP Pavilion with Celeron (sucks) processor at 2.4 with 256mb ram.. and the graphics on halo pc suk!!! poor poor..
And now that i am getting more into video and music and stuff, I heard that Macs are really good to edit that kidna stuff.. and this one program, GarageBand, really attracts me too.
Now, what I really want to know is.. is an iBook really worth it, is it as good as they say it is? I know that normal desktop macs are way better, of course, but I dont want one of those.. i want a laptop!
And here's what I actually want it for:
-recording, downloading, playing music
-recording, editing, downloading videos
-gaming (i dont expect kickass graphics for like doom 3 or something)
-programming (java, visual basic.. are there compilers that run on ibook g4s?)
-virtual PC (i dont know if its worth it but it's kinda cooL.. would WinXP run faster on a G4? having in mind its only a virtual emulation?)
-internet applications.. chatting and stuff.. you know..
-telneting! and linux-ing.. kinda..
-wireless internet! (i hate cable HATE HATE HATE)!!

and that's all i can think about..
do you think a iBook g4 will do for me? Do you guys think i'll get used to it pretty fast? and even like it better than a pc?
Thanks a lot for reading this boring *** topic.. and maybe reply to it too!

ps: why did i post this? because december 16 is my bday and my parents could lend me their credit card.. ^.^ (i'll pay for it though..)

Mac OS X is Unix based, Linux is similar to Unix.

-An iBook would be sufficient for your music/video stuff. You will probably want more than the base 256mb of ram.
-You can do java on a mac but Visual Studio will only run on a mac, so no VB.
-Wireless internet would be no problem since they now come with wireless cards built in, you'll just need to buy a wireless access point or wireless router.
-Virtual PC, isn't very useful, it is pretty slow, like emulation usually is.
-Gaming would be OK for really light stuff, a Radeon 9200 32mb isn't the best but is better than the onboard video that is most likely in your HP Pavilion.

Those older Celeron processors aren't very good but you still should be able to run multiple applications at once and with the addition of a decent video card you would be able to run Halo. A well built PC with an up-to-date operating system shouldn't have crashing issues.

He means Visual studio will only run on a PC...

But OS X does come with a complete programming environment for free called XCode, which might be interesting...

Video/music editing is great on the iBook, no problems as long as you get a larger harddrive (60GB build-to-order option on apple website or external drive)

Wireless internet - no probs

Gaming: Will be better on iBook than old celeron, but not as good as on a current PC (less games, usually not as well converted so there are speed issues)

1. There is no computer that "Never crashes"...and you will find that most times when one does it is operator error causing it.

2. You can do the same on your PC... Although your processor is rather weak and you are way short on ram to do to much of it.

3. Don't blame Halo for your weak processor, shortage of ram, and probably a weak video card..

4.5.6. I see no reason why it won't work quite well for these jobs. Give it at least 512 megs of ram and a good video card and you should have a gamer.

7. Nothing ever works its greatest in emulation. Only time I have ever seen better performance in emulation was OS\2 doing windows 3.1 programs... The term "better windows than windows" was true in those days...

8.Should be no problems here

9.Happy Birthday, do yourself a big favor, get that Mac....

Lmao I love that. As if running more than one application at the same time is this luxury which lowly Linux and Windows users do not possess. I've got this great mental image now of two dudes, one wearing an Apple shirt and another wearing a Windows XP shirt, and the dude with the XP shirt is fat and his belly is hanging out, and he's trying to rub his belly and pat his head, but he keeps yelling "illegal operation" and starting over again, and then the dude in the Mac shirt has six hands and is rubbing his belly, patting his head, eating a meal, and writing a paper all at the same time.

'cause when it rains, you know it pours.
