Hey, I'm going to be buying a Macbook Pro in the near future for college next fall and I just had a quick question about apple's student discount. I went to the education store and put in the college I'm going to (Penn State, University Park) and it gave me the option of going to PSU's computer store. I did, but I would have to log in using my PSU student ID (which I won't get until June at the earliest). I also saw the "standard apple store for education" option and there didn't seem to be any sort of login althought it still said "penn state" at the top. Am I going to have to input a student ID or something proving I'm a student at checkout? It seems odd that you could buy from the education store without proving you are eligible. All I know is I hope I don't have to wait for my ID from PSU to make the purchase.

If you wait for you ID, its likely you'll pay less buying it from your school

Buying from the online apple edu store you don't need to prove it, its base don honesty. If you buy from the physical apple store you need your acceptance letter and drivers license or your student ID.

Take a chance on the Apple for Education Store and try it. You'll be pleasantly surprised... As long as your credit card number is good, Apple doesn't seem to care. I've always wondered about this. I wonder if they get a subsidy or some sort of tax write off for discounting for "students".

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply. And no, PSU's computer store has the exact same pricing as the online education store.

I got my iMac on student discount!! Back in the day i got an iPod on student discount and to verify u were a student u had to order it from uni! They tracked the IP address to see if it was from a university owned computer! Now tho i get e-mailed offering student discount on heaps of stuff and all i have to do is click on a link and thats it!! CS3 is 140££ for student version, what a massive saving! Im going to have to wait till im a student again to get that cause apparently adobe do the check ups for that! Bring on September!!!

Yup, using the standard Apple Education on-line store I bought a new iMac last Fall (wife works in education) and claimed the 'back to college' free iPod Nano as well - didn't have to prove eligibility for either, though I could have if asked.
