Yesterday afternoon i bought a brand new shiny macbook, i took it from the case and plugged in the charger then i opened it and pressed the power button. After being a loyal windows user since v. 3.1 (back in the dark ages) i was expecting almost looking forward to the hours of settings and tweaking i would have to do before windows (spending my first few hours up close and personal with my new toy ha) would first allow me to access my desktop computer and the internet and look just right. But then to my disappointment after about 2 minutes of putting in my user name and details and hitting continue my macbook had picked up my home network and even accessed both my other windows computers and printer. WOW. why didn't i make this switch earlier... macs just work .

i apologize for the misleading thread title

Yeah... I was similarly shocked when I first got my Mac Pro a few weeks ago. Plug everything in, turn it on, and start surfing, playing, whatever. Similarly I was "disappointed" when I bought an external 500GB Firewire drive for Time Machine backups. I plugged in the drive and turned it on. I didn't get any kind of window about new hardware detected. No familiar loading drivers window. No fun of figuring out why the newly connected device wasn't seen by the OS. None of that. The only thing I got was the Time Machine window popping up asking me if I wanted to use the new drive for Time Machine backups. How disappointing.

Wait till you find yourself sitting down to do routine maintenance only to find you have no spyware or viruses to get rid of. Your biggest worry now is what you should do with all this newfound free time.

It gets worse. You may find yourself discovering that using a computer can be - dare I say it?! - an enjoyable experience. You're doomed. Doomed I say!!!!

Welcome b-mac!! (Hmmm... if the punctuation is in the name, is it proper to include actual punctuation or should it remain off?)

Welcome!

I also had a similar experience when I got my iMac. I was transitioning from day shift to night shift for work, so I thought I'd stay up late one evening to set up the Mac while I was "adjusting" my sleep cycle.

Well it ended up taking longer to break down my PC setup than it did to actually get the Mac up and running. I had the whole night to set it up, install all my stuff, configure everything just the way I wanted, and in the end it only took me about 2 hours.

So I spent the rest of the night watching some DVDs.

Freakin Apple...

So sorry you are disappointed.

I remember the last Windows Media Center laptop I bought just over a year ago. The setup on that was at least 10 minutes while the waiting to start Windows text appeared on the screen. Gosh I miss those days...

For about a minute.

When I got my iMac a week and a half ago, it took longer to find a screw driver small enough than it did to install the ram and setup the computer.

Glad you're loving the Mac!

The hardest part of setting up my Mac was finding a Solitaire game to fill the time I used to spend maintaining my PC.

i have been a full time mac user for just over a year. i origionally bought a macbook and about 3 weeks ago i picked up a 24" 2.8 imac. over the past year or so, i have gotten used to the OS X format and just thought about it as a computer. that all changed the other day when i had to reinstall windows on my friends computer for him, because it was all loaded up with spyware and viruses, and also just slow because it has not been reinstalled for about 4 years. well, needless to say, by the time i was done, i could not have been more thankful to get on my imac lol. the macbook is a great notebook and i am sure you will like it as much as i still like mine!

Congrats and welcome to the family. :-)

I'll tell you what someone said to me when I got mine.... "Your first of more to come."

The nice thing about Mac is no viruses/spyware, and when you tell your computer to do something (like Sleep!), it does what its told and doesn't argue.

Wait till you try out Time Machine.. ;-)

Welcome b-mac. I know where you are coming from. I was thoroughly disappointed by my Mac too. Where was the challenge of getting the correct drivers for my system? And what's up with the lack of AOL and NetZero dial-up client software all over my machine??? I need that stuff to make me feel useful, forget the fact that I haven't used a modem in 10 years.

Man, when I first fired up my Mac and was up and running within a few minutes it made me really miss the 15 step, 30 minute ordeal that is initial Windows setup. And now you won't even get the unbridled joy of having to install 350 security patches the first time you fire up your machine.

Yep - I feel your pain man.
