New to the forum and this is what I think...

I've been using forums now for a fair few years now, since 2004 maybe. On my old forum I had around 27,000 posts which wasn't actually as high as you'd think with it being a very active forum. I came to this forum mostly because of my recent Windows to Mac conversion as I have just bought my first Mac. I really like this forum but all the sections are to do with Apple products apart from 1 where anything goes. Talking about Mac's is fun but I'd also like to talk about many other things. The Anything Goes section isn't really enough for what I am looking for. Maybe I have this all wrong and people use other forums to discuss random things then this forum to just talk about apple/mac's? If so then I apologize for making this thread.

This is a Mac Forum and as such, the focus rests with discussion about Macs and Apple products. We all enjoy random ideas and thoughts once in a while and that's where Anything Goes comes in. Do we really need more than one forum for random discussion?

As for other forums, there is the "Windows, Classic, Linux, and Other OS", "Other Hardware and Peripherals" and each of the 4 forums in the "Digital Lifestyle" section. Add "Anything Goes" to that list and I count 7 forums for potential discussion of non-Apple products.

Agreed. There's plenty of places to discuss hardware and software not made by apple.

If you are as familiar with internet forums as you say you are...then you would already be very familiar with the fact that many many internet forums are subject specific!

This means that a majority of the topics discussed are related to the specific subject matter that the website/forum revolves around. This doesn't mean that here at Mac-Forums nothing other than Apple or Macintosh topics are discussed...but the vast majority of threads are Apple or Macintosh related...as it should be for a website called "Mac-Forums".

Just my humble opinion,

- Nick

If you want to discuss something (as long as it's not against the Community Guidelines here at Mac Forums) you can make a thread in Anything Goes if it's non computer related.

Sorry, didn't notice the other hardware/software discussions. I would of included them with the main focus of this thread too though. I know this isn't the kind of forum I'm use to but in the ones I have stayed on for a long time have sections such as: Sports, jokes and funny things, spam section, graphics, game consoles, PC gaming, online gaming, music, TV & film, writing and literature, designing and development, forum designing, fashion and clothes, food and drinks, tourism/holidays/vehicles and transport, debates, current affairs. If this forum is to discuss Apple products and other things to do with computing then I apologize for assuming that it is also for general chit-chat. I know there is a section for anything but it just doesn't crack it for me. Not to worry though, I will use this forum for my Apple needs and other forums for general discussion.

You can do general discussion in Anything Goes. Think of it as an umbrella forum for the list you have. As dtravis7 said though, make sure it doesn't go against the community guidelines.

Since this forum is designed for primarily discussing Apple & Apple Macintosh products, topics, and problems...these are the reasons members are initially drawn here. This doesn't mean that once a member has all of their questions answered they can't or don't discuss anything else...but the primary subject focus are Apple products.

If all of a sudden 75% of the threads were non-Apple or Non-Macintosh related...then there wouldn't be much point in calling the Website "Mac-Forums".

I belong to other forums as well...all are subject specific. Which means the specific subject that the website was designed for is what is mostly discussed.

I think that you are more used to or are more familiar with website forums like Yahoo, or MSN, etc...where they have probably hundreds or more topics that are discussed (all in their own separate categories). The one problem with these websites is that they are a "Jack of all trades...and master of none!"

I certainly wouldn't go to a more "generic" forum website to get answers to my Apple or Macintosh related questions or to discuss Apple or Macintosh topics...I would come right here!!!

Again...just my humble opinion,

- Nick

Sur3Mac has a spectacular aura about
Mac Specs: MacBook Pro Unibody 15"(mid2009)/ 2.66GHz/4,00 GB/320GB - iPhone 3G/ 8GB // PowerBook 1,25 GHz/1,5GB
Yeah, but having visited there, I must conclude that they have almost none or very few community guidelines

in short... I think it's a mess, people are rude, and post stay unanswered for days.

There is, it's called Anything Goes. And if you want to discuss anything off-topic, please feel free to create a thread on your favorite subject, hobby or sport.

It seems like you have the mindset that all forums have the same goals and purpose, which is not the case here at least. Here, we talk about anything and everything mac related. It's a mac forum.

I've talked with a moderator at Overclockers Forum, our sister site from iNET. They had members bring up wanting to have a mac forum added to the site. But they came to the conclusion, why make a mac forum on an overclocker site, when there is barely any demand and that they can send their members to our site instead.

I don't see why it wouldn't be preferable to just go to a different site that specializes in a topic you are interested in, if you are really that passionate about it. You are far better off joining a non-mac speciality forum that has a wealth of better knowledge, well rehearsed members, and a complexity of broad opinions.

However, if you need love advice, I would recommend posting in Anything Goes, I've never seen a failed love advice thread yet from there.
