I've had the same copy of OS X for years with no slowdowns. I think as long as you keep sufficient hard drive space and don't have a bunch of background processes - you'll be able to enjoy OS X...

Yea, I like keeping my dock clutter-free and simple - stacks seems to accomplish this nicely. Can even do various stacks based on app type: i.e. Games, Web Design, Photo/Video, etc
