I would suggest installing Windows XP or Vista via Boot Camp and then using Parallels or Fusion to install the other OS.

Personally I still use Yahoo Mail in the browser and not in Mail.app. I just don't like the POP experience with a local email client. IMAP is much better in my opinion.
