Yes, I've done both. I just noticed that the edit option from the menu bar (at least in Google Chrome) shows command-option-shift-v as the shortcut, if it helps at all.

Yes, it can be done without much effort. However, for a permanent solution, both PSUs are still necessary: no ATX PSU has a 24v rail.

I don't think that would make a difference for SMART, and I didn't repair anything, if the HDD is failing there is nothing to repair, it's gone. Repair is useful if the directory is in trouble.
