Norm,

Time Machine will backup your OS as well, but be aware that a Time Machine backup is not bootable.
This means that you need to install the OS first before you can restore from a TM backup....

Don't forget to rename the file you last saved or you will loose that one too :-)

At this stage you still have 2 operating systems ( iOS and OS X ) and comparing speeds between the 2 is impossible, let alone the differences in hardware.
They are very different machines :-)
