The Mac Pro can certainly output a resolution up to 2560x1900. I am willing to bet this isn't an issue with the graphics card but with the display settings either on the Mac or on the TV itself.

Is it the original battery? If it's from '06 or '07 the battery is probably just about shot. They usually only last 2-3 years of normal use before rapidly losing capacity and charge.
