As far the vendor of ram I would pick either Crucial or Kingston, just for my opinion. I wouldn't get the cheapest you find though because I have found the cheap sticks will give you random crashes...

I have always relied on Crucial ram. but Im taking a guess if you use Corsair or Kingston ram will work just as well, but DO NOT get the value ram of any of them. I've made that mistake a few times...

It sounds like either they used a 3rd party superdrive or the didn't connect the drive correctly. If the cable is loose then a little vibration form the drive or a fan could cause a bad connection....
