I pulled one of the RAM sticks and managed to get the OS installed with it running on battery. Works fine with a known good charger as well. I got kernel panics again with both RAM sticks installed.

I doubt it's the SATA cable, otherwise it might freeze or crash but everything works just fine...until it's powered off and then it's a brick and doesn't want to start.
