4th generation ipod problem

My sons iPod not used in a while, he can't remember his password. It says on screen " ipod disabled , connect to iTunes " when we do that nothing happens and It won't charge or anything. Any ideas??

Here's what happens.... Open Elements, go to file open, as it opens crashes....
