Why don't you upgrade to at least 2GB RAM? It's pretty easy to do. Try reseting the PRAM and repair the disk permissions and see if that helps. When I upgraded to Snow Leopard, things moved quicker...

I use iDefrag and it works great. Haven't really tried anything else. You can also run Onyx and run the tools to optimize your system. That should help out slightly or moderately as well.
