3.5 inch Hard drives are for desktop computers. Like CrimsonRequim said you need one that's 9.5mm high, some higher capacity 2.5 inch HD's are 12.5mm high and will not fit.

It happens on mine too. It will show up as green on the desktop usually, but under the "system preferences -> time machine " the hard drive shows as yellow. Weird. It still back up and works ok...
