OS X update

Hi,

I am currently running Mac OS X 10.5.8 on an early iMac from 2008 (20.0" screen). I was wondering how do I update it to latest OS. Or can i even do that ?

But then again, that doesn't quite explain why it would shutdown when attempting to open disk utilties or install a software. I am confused.
