There's a little switch you need to trip inside the jack. If you use a flashlight and look carefully you should be able to see it. This has happened occasionally to me and I use an unfolded paperclip.

Well, after using PCs all of my life, I finally made the switch to Mac two weeks ago. I ended up with a MacBook (80 GB hard drive, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo), and love it so far....
