I would go with Snow Leopard though. But, essentially, it is just a 64 bit kernel version, apart from some 64bit supported applications (mail, finder...).

From Linux's point of view, it is huge....

your home directory would be,

/Users/<your username>

/usr - is available in Mac and you need sudo permission, at the minimal to write anything on it...
