I upgraded my wife's drive to a 200GB Hitachi 7200RPM drive and it had a noticeable performance impact (better). Also, Mac Pros go up to 32GB of RAM, so it's not an OS X issue I don't think.

You don't have to unlock the screen to adjust the volume- just tap the Home button twice and then adjust the volume, skip songs or whatever. The screen stays locked.
