it's not dangerous to play with the fans using smcFanControl (one I use) since "smc" was released by Apple for developers to come up with an application that will help in resolving heat issues.

The bars that you see on the airport icon only tell that you are fully connected to the router or the base station. That doesn't mean that you are onnected to the Internet. You may have a problem...

Well it's a good thing that you turned it off immediately... I would say bring it to Apple and tell them if it's possible that they help you clean the internal parts of the notebook. Just be honest...
