I'll try that tonight when I get home but I'm not sure that this is the problem. The iMac is always connected to the router with a strong signal strength as the router is only 3 meters from the iMac....

Sorry mate I don't think I've explained it properly. The drives on question have a power saving feature that detects when the host computer is switched off I.e. No voltage is going down the USB bus....
