Check Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy and see if your main volume is in the ignore list.

Doesn't Cmd-Option-M do the same as Windows-M? I wouldn't get used to minimizing windows, there have been all kinds of complaints with Mission Control in Lion not supporting them.
