Call Support, only solution was to re-install the OS but at least no hardware failure.

Fault has gone since the reload and have restored back all of what I needed to (thank gawd for Time Machine)...

OK, did the obvious and clicked Help - looks like my mail has never been backed up since I only see 'today' in Time Machine.

I think I had better go away and look at how Time Machine really works...
