Sun has a free/open virtual machine software - let's you run any OS in a window! I'm trying Kubuntu Jaunty (alpha) with it and it looks awesome with kde 4.2.1.

If I had to guess these problems wouldn't exist on the 17". Apple fixed them on the 15" before even releasing the 17" version...
