Reporting back...

After resetting my network settings for a second time on the iMac, it hasn't dropped DNS for 6 days now. Not sure why it took two tries, but it seems to be working.

Upgrading...

The Cisco VPN client has a configuration option that lets you enable or disable local LAN access while the VPN is connected.

Perhaps your VPN client has the same option?
