Airport without a router?

The diagram on the left, i.e. with the router, works fine. But when I remove the router, as pictured on the right, none of the devices are able to obtain an IP address...

Anybody have any idea why...

ok i took the back off and the black connector is pretty securely fastened. it looks like the problem is in the lcd assembly... unfortunately taking that apart is not just a matter of a few screws...

So I dropped my Macbook Air while it was closed...

In the Finder, when there's an alias, it only displays the size of the alias (i.e. 44 KB). Is there any way to just have it display the size of file the alias goes to?
