if you're using bootcamp, you're booting XP or OSX seperately.
IE you have to shut down one to use the other.

Parallels allows you to use both at the same time and also allows them to share files

i would start with garageband (as its free with the iMac you're getting) and then move into protools or logic as you get more advanced with the software and familiar with the OS

mine were sharp as well.. i simply got a sander thing at home depot, fine grain, and went over it a little bit. nice and smooth now.
