To add a little more info, I put back in the old battery, OS X gave me a charge time of 10 hours, and then I watched the battery slowly trickle charge to seven percent, after which it jumped to 100%....

Yeah, but any genuine battery is going to be used and not last for very long at this point. Or it'll cost an arm and a leg.
