USB3 isn't fast enough to over-run a rotational drive either enough to justify the additional costs. It's faster, that is true.. but about half the speed of TB.

I would NOT at all bother using SSD externally if not attached via Thunderbolt or eSATA. A USB SSD is an expensive waste IMO.

Run a large number of image stitch, then remove the RAM and do the same thing.. timing it both times ;) Much better than a benchmark test since it's probably closer to actual workflow.

Yep, I settled on a slide scanner (I also scan negatives with it) for this.. it's not a cheap option.. but if you don't have the other required equipment.. it may well be a much better one.
