From what I can understand, you need OSX to be installed in the primary partition of the HDD for it to boot up. I am not very technical, but if you can change the disk priority, probably can be done....

Anyway, since Apple made it so easy to run windows in their mac, why not just go the bootcamp route? Nothing to it.

I would suggest to fresh install SL. I upgraded from leopard, although I didn't have the slow problem as you, what I found was that the space used by the upgrade was much more than Leopard alone....

Is your drive currently partitioned? If it is, bootcamp need to restore your disk as one whole partition. After that is done, then you can use bootcamp to repartition for windows installation.
