Opening a program in the background?

Maybe it's just me, but I like to open a program while I'm doing something else. Is there a way to open a program without it opening on top of the program that I am currently using?

I don't think the hinges are any looser between the 15" and the 17" laptops, at least not between my friend's and mine. The hinges are made to be alike, but looseness can still vary between laptops...
