Toshiba announced today that it would stop selling HD-DVD components by the end of march, officially ending the high-def disk format war which makes sony's blu-ray format the winner.

I was reading about that earlier. People can add their HD DVD players to the pile of laser disk players that never caught on.

I'm glad it went in Sony's favor this time. Luckily for me, I got a PS3 for Christmas!

It's nice to see the better tech win out for once. Beta wins this round....

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

You can add me to one of the early adopters of HD DVD that's now paying the price. Luckily I managed to only buy about 7 HD DVD's, now I'm on to Blu-Ray.

I'm also glad to see that this ridiculous format war has ended. Now we can see prices come down, especially on recordable media. Can't wait to get my hands on 50GB+ optical discs.

Won't prices stay the same now that Blu-ray doesn't have to compete with HD-DVD.
I saw a BD-ROM drive for $200 on OWC. Thinking about putting one of those bad boys in my Mac. At $25 a disc, I will wait to buy a recordable drive. 2x and 4x drives will be slow when disc prices are reasonable.

Did Blu-Ray really win anything?

Just a thought, but will BD reach the kind of sales we've seen in DVDs, or will the download market mean this victory is ultimately pointless?

I'd rather have a hard copy for the higher quality audio/ video. I still only use iTunes as a last resort or if I get free money.
That's a good point though. It will depend on the number willing to DL while having a high speed connection.

Ill def use blu-ray over iTunes. The movies arent released onto itunes until after a month of the official release. No 1080p. Sometimes no Surround sound. Im getting a PS3 over the summer.

Nope, it still has to compete with DVD. Just like with previous technology, it will take lower prices to get mass adoption.

I was thinking about getting a BluRay drive for my HTPC. It would be much cheaper than buying a standalone player. Though I would have to switch from my TV's VGA connection to HDMI; fortunately that won't cost much.

Good point Kash. It took many years for me to switch from cassettes to CDs. But I was in middle school with no allowance so $ was hard to come by.
It's hard to justify the extra $10- $20 cost a disc when DVD prices are linda high IMO.

HD DVD is dead; Long live HD DVD.

I guess this means that I should go pick up an HD DVD player now. I'll have a limited number of titles to collect!

MacBook 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo - 4 GB RAM - 320 GB HDD - OS X 10.6
80 GB iPod Classic - "fredPod II"
8 GB iPhone 3GS - "fredPhone"
