Welcome to Mac-Forums, jeffd.
I shut it down every night and in the daytime when I'm not around. It's for economical (I can't afford a BackUPS unit with graceful shutdown and it's to save on the electricity bill as well) and ecological reasons I do this. I run the maintenance tasks manually using MainMenu every day. |

I only restart/shut down on necessary updates.
The uptime on my PowerMac is something around 25 days... I try to Command+Shift+/ when I can. They're - Their - There | Two - Too - To | You're - Your | MAC - Mac I was on the M-F honor roll for October, 2006.

I sleep mine at night, or when it's going to be unused for a few hours. Other than that I'll reboot only when updating OS X, or in the rare cases when that spinning ball won't disappear.

I only restart my Mac if it needs it or if an update requires it. I only turn it off if I am going to be out of town for more that 5 consecutive days.

When I feel my poor iMac needs rest. I used to maintain a policy of keeping it off at night, but alas, I have stuff running at night nowadays and the processor won't die because of those hours of more work it does (touchwood).

Mine never goes down unless there is an update that needs a restart to install or my USB hub feels like kernal panicing it.
