I bought my first Mac about three years back having used Windows since 3.1. I have since bought a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and my wife has a MacBook. Today I needed a Windows computer for ONE job I could not do on a Mac.

SEVEN hours after starting to install Windows 7 I still can't do the job as the bloody computer is still downloading updates. So far it has downloaded over 140 updates and rebooted more times than I can remember.

The only good point is it has reminded me why I changed to a Mac in the first place.

How old is the Windows disk you used for the installation? I have a Windows 7 disk from 2+ years ago, and another from 2 months ago. The newer one has very few updates left to download after installation. Did you apply the Service Packs first, and then do the updates? That can cut out a bunch of repetitive stuff as well. I agree though, that Mac has fewer (though generally much larger and vaguer) updates.

Heh. If you want to talk about massive updates, try in stalling from a WinXP pre-SP1 disc. That'll take you a few DAYS to get through....

Yes...I feel your pain!

I purchased a used Dell laptop as a gift this past Christmas. Wiped the HD...and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP SP3. Like you said, hours & hours later finally done (I think that it was about 10+ hours for me).

Maybe some knowledgeable person can explain why it takes so long to install the Windows OS...when it only takes 30-45 minutes to install Snow Leopard or Lion (I think Leopard took longer)...like 1.0-1-5 hours. But certainly not 10 hours like XP.

Leopard on my G5 iSight iMac took maybe 45 Min or around. Lion goes in very fast as does SL.
