This might sound like a stupid question but how do I set Firefox to be my default browser so that Safari stops opening up if I click on something that requires a browser?

You'll do this in Safari. Go to the Prefs, then you'll see, where to choose from in the General tab.

In Safari. Yeah sounds weird huh? But yeah in Safari Prefs you can change it.

Safari-Preferences-General-Default Web Browser

Change it and you are set to go. I would clear cache too.

You mean to clear the cache in Safari or in Firefox?

In Safari. It is always good to clear it once in a while in all browsers. Sometimes that's what slows down browsers over time. Simple clearing will speed it back up.
