Various memory types- RAM of the future.

Could someone tell me why it isn't practical to use DDR3 Memory as system memory right now? Heck, for that matter, why not XDR? I mean, I can see why not for laptops since DDR and DDR2 are lower power consumption, but why not at least in desktops?

DDR3 is three times faster than most memory we have now.

XDR? Anywhere from 5 to 20 times.

Announcing the first generation of Intel PowerMacs as the first personal computers with either DDR3 or XDR system memory would be one heck of a way to hit the ground running.

Yes, but Apple already way overcharges for their current RAM--three times what most companies charge for it.

Just imagine when they would charge if they had to pay royalties to rambus. A lot of people don't buy their RAM from Apple, so it would really hurt those people.

I don't think the memory is a huge limiting factor in modern systems.
