Does Messenger 8's new video chat feature stack up to facetime?

I've never used either. I just want to see for those who have used it, does it stack up to facetime or is it just a pale imitation and not worth bothering to use?

I use Skype for video chatting with friends. All I can say about programs that have the ability to view the other person in real time is that it all depends on your connection, their connection and their camera (especially if you're the one on the Mac). And what they're using on their end (I have a friend who makes the most use of a Windows XP computer with half-gig RAM and 1.25GHz Intel) I guess would be a dependent as well.

I say all of this because there isn't a huge thing to set up in FaceTime as we all know.

+1 on videochat depends on your network speed, and also Videchatting is being used a lot in Skype and also in Windows messengers.

Not everything that Apple does has to be the great thing...

No, because if you use Messenger 8, you won't be able to contact me.
