GMail is not professional and people that give me cards using some goofy account like that never get called back. It tells me that you don't care enough about your own business much less me, the client.
I have been using 1 and 1 for a while and they are not bad. I personally don't think that exchange is worth the cost and I am a former Exchange admin. What you really need to ask yourself is "do I need the full functionality of exchange and will my clients be able to use it"? If you are not really running Outlook then you are not going to get the full benefit of Exchange. If your primary need is only e-mail and not calendar, tasks, centralized groups, etc... then I would stick with a simple POP server. Only you can really answer what your needs are.
Hosting services are all over the place and some are better than others. As I said, 1 and 1 have worked well for me and I am sure there are others out there that can fit your needs.
The last option is what was recommended above. You could actually setup your own server and host it yourself. I have also done this with my in-laws business. We setup a Linux server running popa3d and it worked great for them. Of course this requires that you setup a domain and get it pointed to your IP address correctly. If you are going to go through all that trouble, you might as well use their e-mail services as it is included in most of their packages. We cut them over to the new e-mail just the other day.
