F buttons

I have a new MacBook, and the F buttons have pictures on them like F4 which is dashboard. One day, none of them worked and they all did different things. When I tried to increase the volume, it brought me to the microsoft word save menu! What do I do?

Check in System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse.
