AT&T to boost 3G speeds more than fivefold by 2009

20Mbps on a mobile device!! That's faster than a lot of residential broadband connections!!

It says 2009 and would most likely require new hardware to take advantage of the updated spec. I'm interested in knowing whether the 3G iPhone would be able to take advantage of the updated speeds...

thats 4 times the speed of my internet at my house wow. thats insane if this happens.

Well, if I was Apple, I would think that being able to resell another updated iPhone for a faster connection could be a big moneymaker. I guess it depends on how greedy they are.

Yea, that was my first thought as well.

Though after reading the article a bit more, it says that a simple software update would enable the increased speeds. So who knows, maybe we'll see it with the 3.0 firmware

Don't get too excited folks. There is a big difference between what you can do in the lab and what you can do on the street. This is "4G" I believe, and 3G is just gaining public acceptance now. Carriers are going to want to recoup their huge investments in 3G before cannibalizing them with 4G. I would be surprised to see this in the market before 2012 or so...

According to the article, this is actually 3G and 4G will be rolled out using the newly acquired 700MHz spectrum. This is further reinforced by the statement that all it will take is a software update to get existing equipment to take advantage of the faster speeds. 4G would require completely new hardware.
