I know a desktop version of the 8600 GT would be better than a desktop version of the 2400 XT, but I don't know if the 8600 GT is clocked down low enough compared with a desktop version of the chipset to make it slower than a 2400XT.

The MacBook Pro is better on the low end and the mid range. On the high end the iMac wins.
