I've been taking business classes and I can't say that I enjoy them (I just tolerate them). But now I'm a year away from graduating and I need to figure out what I want to do (I have no idea). So what in business should I major in?

The choices are Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, Economics, and International Business.

If I had to pick on what I liked most, it would be marketing. I heard its not a good major to choose though. Any advice? Any other frustrated college students here?

My advice, a decade after college, is to major in what you enjoy. I don't even list my education on my resume anymore. Barely anyone even asks.

you enjoy marketing so i'd go with that.

probably more money in international business though, but they you'd have to worry about when you have a family how often you would actually see them.

Well it all depends on what you like doing/what you are good at. You a people person, or numbers person? Are you organized? I myself am entering into a Marketing emphasis business major next year because after being in DECA at my school, an advanced business class that competes and such, I enjoy everything in marketing. It is more of an overall everything course. Management deals more with leadership and working well with people. What you could do is keep your business major and start a minor with something you like. My friend is going as a business major and music major. He wants to open up his own recording studio, so he'll probably do entrepreneurship. It all comes down to what you like to do/what you're good at. Good luck with whatever you choose!

You're a third year and you still haven't declared a major yet? My school practically forced us to pick something by the middle of our second year.

My 2 favorite subjects in my nearly 4 years in college were anthropology and criminology (I took 2 anthropology classes for a general education requirement and a criminology course as an exit requirement). But I don't know what I could do with those degrees. I originally went for business because I thought about staying in the grocery store business and getting a management degree to help me move up the ranks faster. I wanted to be at least a store director. Then I got fired from my job and now I just don't know.

My scholarship is about to end, so I feel pressured just to finish off the whatever I pick in business because I am a year away from getting a degree. My dad wants me to do accounting and get a CPA, but even though I know I can get a job with it... I don't see myself doing that type of work. I'm just frustrated guys.

As for what I'm good at or have a passion for, I am a good writer and I'm good at explaining things to people. I'm not a very outgoing person though, I can be if its a part of my job... I just feel like I've dug myself in a hole and now I'm screwed. I seriously don't want to be doing formulas and number crunching all day. I would like to use my creative side (or whatever imagination I have left).

Were any of you unsure about what to major in?

I declared mine pretty much as early as I could... sorry

It is in a completely unrelated field to what I do for a living, night and day in that respect.

Another reason why I did business was because I thought it would be a safe choice. Because it would give me a broader range of options. I think I'll go to the library and stare at the occupational handbook... again.

There's nothing wrong with marketing, and I'm sure it can be as profitable as any other field. Probably more so.

I told my business adviser that I heard marketing wasn't that good of a major. She told me that a lot of people with that degree end up in retail. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but how she said it made it sound like they were doing something crappy. I don't care about the money, I just want to be happy. I was told to just finish up my business degree and if I go for a masters, then that degree is what really matters. It would be nice to have a government job though. They get nice benefits.

That was my exact thoughts. So thats why I questioned it.

Honestly, you got it spot on. I am a college student myself, so I cannot speak "through my years" or offer you advice based on experience. But from what I have been told by most of everyone, is stick with what you are happy doing, and pursue whatever it is that makes you happy.

Its time to go...

Well, marketing is a whole different animal from other business majors. With marketing success usually has much more to do with your personality and interpersonal skills, which usually are innate and can't be taught. I think maybe a lot of people just aren't cut out for it and that's why they end up where they are. That and probably because a lot of people get into marketing because they think it's more interesting and saturate the job market.

I don't know what your business advisor specializes in, but if you want to know about marketing careers, talk to a prof who teaches marketing has likely worked in marketing. You may even strike up a relationship that could lead to a good job someday.
