During Sunday School this past weekend, I was poking fun at one of our classmates because he is having lots of trouble with his new Vista machine. Of course, as a very happy Mac owner and recent switcher, I had to recommend to my friend he ditch that bloated cow of an OS and buy a Mac! As soon as I finished my sales pitch (no, I get no revenue from Apple for promoting their products) another friend went into this triad about how Apple's logo represents the fruit of the garden Eve ate and how part of their development is named "Darwin" so that obviously means Apple stands against Christ. Now I don't want to get into a religious debate here; I just want the facts. As far as I'm concerned, Apple is a business and, therefore, profits are their primary, if not only, concern. But I have to ask: Is there any truth to my friend's claims?

Look on wikipedia

Apple were called apple apparently, because Steve likes apples...

AS for darwin, it is probably from Charles Darwin, but is unlikely to be a decision from Apple's Board

The Darwin developers decided to adopt a mascot in 2000, and chose Hexley the platypus over other contenders, such as an Aqua Darwin fish, Clarus the Dogcow, and an orca. Apple does not sanction Hexley as a logo for Darwin.

(the platipus is a bit of an evolutionary oddity, a mammal that lays eggs)

Really, you could take any amount of accidental phases and link them in to passages within the bible to state your case.

Now this makes much more sense than her babble. I'll be printing that wiki article for her to read. Thanks!

According to this logic, anyone that eats apples would be one that stands against Christ.
Does this person eat apples?? And there is no where it is called an apple in the original language and is merely used with "artistic license" by some of the modern translations.

It is called the 'fruit' of the "tree of knowledge of good and evil" and the 'fruit' of the "tree of life".
What, were they both apples? Was one a Granny Smith apple and the other a Red Delicious Apple? Or is one an apple and the other a pear? Maybe one was a banana and the other a kiwi fruit. See how ridiculous this whole thing is?

And as far as Darwin, what, has there only been one man or thing during the history of the earth that has gone by this name? So now, anyone born into the world and into a family named Darwin is automatically evil re-spawned? Gimme a break... What about all the ones that were named Darwin before this particular Darwin - they're OK - but everyone and everything named Darwin after this one, they're not? Or are all Darwins now lumped in together with this one guy? I'd like to know. Explain it to me...

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.

Ohhh man. Well, you should ask this friend to go read the original latin/aramaic scripture and let you know if it was REALLY an apple, or if that info has been lost in translation.

That may be the most ludicrous statement I've ever heard.

That was my initial reaction and she digressed at that point. She could not, of course, prove it was a apple. However, I know this woman and this conversation is far from over. I just want to have some information about the logo, if possible. I can certainly stand my ground biblically with her; That isn't an issue. What was funny is on the way home after church my wife said she could see in my eyes, as well as everyone else, I thought our friend was completely insane.

Some religious people can find a way to make anything about religion. It's a business...don't read too much into it.

If you look hard enough, you can see anything you want. Just string together some vague ideas to create whatever you like.

That's also true for many "places of worship". I think L. Ron Hubbard once said the best way to get rich is to start a religion.

Let's hope she drives a Chrysler product. You could have hours of fun.

Chrysler had a long bout against that superstitious nonsense because of its pentagram logo. Oooo. Scary stuff.

Probably the most famous case regarding this claptrap is that of Procter and Gamble. Snopes, the veteran and highly respected urban-legends site, has the goods on it here. It's constantly recycled in some fashion about countless companies, probably by the competition.

Obviously, if she thinks Apple is of Satan, she doesn't run Vista.

This looks like the kind of crowd she would hang with:

Unlike people who actually enjoy Star Wars, I get the feeling these guys actually think "the force" is real!!
