Hey gang, this is my first post, as I am a new member having just been given an old "blue and white" iMac with 8.6 on it. I have worked with and have since ordered OS9 for this machine, and really like OS9 (And 8.6 for that matter) . I don't feel the need (or have the cash) for OSX yet, and wonder if there are people who feel content with OS9? I like the interface better in many ways to OSX, and certainly better than Windows. Are there sites which are dedicated to OS9? Is there a vital interest in keeping OS9 alive, or am I on a sinking ship?

It's a sinking ship (actually, it's on the ocean floor, encrusted with barnacles). But I refuse to send Quark any more money, so I still run it.

You're going to need Norton Utilities for 9 or DiskWarrior for 9 — preferably both — because without one or the other or both, your own installation will sink sooner rather than later. Disk Utility's First Aid is a joke.

Check out lowendmac.com.

OS 9 died over 5 years ago. The only real benefits to it are if your machine is less than a G3, or if you are like Brown Study and have older programs that you absolutely need to run under OS 9.
You can find copies of previous OS X versions for relatively nothing, so price shouldn't be an issue.

If you do want to upgrade to OS X at some time, you can find copies of panther (10.3) on eBay for around $20 or so. I found that 10.4 didn't run that well on the old gumdrop iMacs anyways.

Sorry, no. I've never been much of a gamer. I have Crystal Caliburn, but I have no idea how I got it or why. It might have been free with an olden-days MacAddict or something.

I have The Insult Generator that creates faux-Elizabethan-English insults. It can be fun, but it's not a game. The same insults are on a couple of websites, anyway — mix and match columns A, B and C.

If you search the web for

"OS 9" games

you'd likely find a bunch. Maybe lowendmac has a list.

I still have machines with OS 9 on them and still use them. Have no plans to use intel Macs or Vista PCs, I'll use Linux first. Beware if you upgrade to 10 , You must update the firmwear on the Imac first before you install 10.
